Wrinkle Smoothers

To improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

There are many muscles of the face that allow us to make various facial expressions such as smiling, squinting, raising the eyebrows, and frowning. Over time, the lines created by these facial movements can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Wrinkle smoother treatments can help improve your appearance by relaxing the muscles of facial expression, preventing you from making the lines that can lead to deep wrinkles over time. Wrinkle smoothers may also be referred to as wrinkle relaxers, neuromodulators, or neurotoxins. Wrinkle smoothers can be used in all skin types.

Dr. DiGiorgio offers two different wrinkle smoothers to her patients, Botox® and Dysport®. These products have the same mechanism of action, relaxing the muscles of facial expression and smoothing the appearance of wrinkles, but have slightly different characteristics. Dr. DiGiorgio will choose the product that best fits your needs.

First, Dr. DiGiorgio will meet with you during your initial consultation and determine if you are a candidate for treatment.

On the day of your treatment, a very tiny needle will be used to strategically place the product into the selected muscle. The injection itself causes minor temporary discomfort and the treatment is well-tolerated by most patients. The treatment takes less than 15 minutes. Immediately after, there will be a slight redness in the spot that was injected and sometimes a small area of swelling—this all goes away in about 20 minutes. Bruising is very uncommon and, if it occurs, is usually very small and not noticeable. You will be provided with aftercare instructions. You can usually resume all normal activities within 24 hours. You will be instructed to avoid any intense massaging of the area treated (no facials) and intense exercise for 24 hours.

The products begin to integrate into the muscles of facial expression about 3-4 days after the treatment and the full effect is achieved 14 days after the treatment.

After the treatment, you will still be able to make all of your facial expressions and you will still look like yourself, however, you will have softening and smoothing of your fine lines and wrinkles.

On average, the relaxation of facial muscles from wrinkle smoothers gradually dissipates and typically lasts 3-4 months on average. The duration varies from patient to patient due to each person’s unique metabolism of product and is also dependent on the concentration used. A more conservative or lighter treatment will not last as long as a stronger treatment. Overtime, treatments prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
